Russian Olivewood Project: Uprooted Tree to Useful Wood - Timeline

Fall 2007:
After many years spent gracing the front of my friend's Cape Cod cottage, her prized Russian Olivewood tree is partially uprooted in a bad Nor'easter.  Her tree guy says it is iffy whether the tree can be saved, and they decide to give it some time and TLC and see what happens.

July 1, 2008:  Well, it's been 8 months, and the tree is leaning way over at the base and has to come down.  Over the course of a couple of weeks, the tree is felled, limbed, and bucked.  The limbs go into the chipper, and we get the trunk, which is cut into logs about 3' long and 5" - 6" in diameter.

The green mossy growth on the bark attests to how much rain we've had this year in Eastern MA.  Hmmm.  Picking it off sounds like a perfect job for my assistant.

... About 12 years old, I'd say, from the ring count.

July 20, 2008:  To keep the log ends from splitting, we use AnchorSeal, our favorite lumber and end sealer.   The sooner after cutting that the AnchorSeal is applied, the better.  It's non-toxic, and cleans up with soap & water.  A little AnchorSeal goes a long way, and less than 1/4" worth of a quart can covers all exposed ends and faces of the five small logs shown (as well as some of our driveway and assistant himself -- watch that, as AnchorSeal is paraffin-based, and therefore slippery if spilled and walked on).

... Assistant does a nice job with the application, properly applying the sealer liberally "to the drip," as recommended by the manufacturer.

... AnchorSeal goes on white, and dries to clear.

... OK!  AnchorSealed wood is happy wood.  Now we don't have to worry about end splits.  Our Russian Olivewood logs go onto the lumber rack to start air drying.  We will next turn to the second phase of the project:  Deciding what to do with our wood!
