Virginia's Adventures in Vintage Paradise

What to do after Retirement?

What to do after retirement?

2007 is my first retirement year after spending the past 35 years as a real estate broker in southwest Florida.  Retirement is nice, it lets you decide if you want to work or not and you can choose your profession all over again.  Since I love to shop, I thought a retail store would be an appropriate retirement project and eBay the perfect venue. I have bought and sold on eBay since September of 1998. What should I sell?  Well, I thought, I'm old, how about sellling old things, vintage things.  Good idea, since I was already in possession of many old things I have acquired over the years, a ready made inventory.   I logged onto eBay and clicked on 'open a store', or something like that. Then i was asked to name the store.  Since I had already completed all of the application and didn't want to go through the process again I had to come up with a name.  Well, I thought, my name is Virginia and I'm selling vintage items online = Virginia's Virtual Vintage.

Not very imaginative but it was accurately descriptive, and so it began. I must say, I really enjoy visiting estate sales, liquidation sales and the like looking for treasures to bring to the store.  I have found vintage post cards, magazines and a ton of vintage sheet music. The sheet music is especially fun--the music brings back memories of my favorite tunes and classic music.  Finding adoptive homes for these orphan pieces of music is very satisfying.  The same with the post cards. The buyers of these post cards and vintage music have told me that they are framing post cards of places where their parents, grandparents and others have spent their honeymoon and giving them as anniversary gifts.  Others are picking up the sheet music of a couple's favorite song and giving it as a anniversary gift as well. Those who are musicans have suprized their loved ones with performances of the song.  I am happy to be a part of such happy ocassions.

What a nice comment. I am glad you are enjoying your retirement while earning a little bit of money. I understand that half the fun is the "finding of the treasure". I've been lucky enough to find some beautiful things and turned around and sold them at very "vintage" prices, just because I like the idea of thinking that someone out there appreciates this very old thing. I guess it comes with age, doesn't it? I am still far from retiring, as a matter of fact I still have a 13 year old and an 8 year old at home. Don't be fooled, though, I am an old mom. I will be 52 this year. They do keep me young, however, not highly recommended to have teenagers while going through menopause. Talk about rollercoaster of hormones!!! Anyway, I am glad things are working well for you. I hope that when I retire I find myself with still with this hobby.
