Germination Experiment with Miracle Fruit seeds

I decided to make an experiment with some of my fresh seeds and try to germinate them inside a small sterilized plastic container with a moist paper towel as the only substrate.

I usually germinate my Clivia seeds this way, and I wanted to try if it worked with Miracle Fruit seeds.

After 36 days from the date I planted them, this is how they look like.

Notice the long radical roots. The stems and primary leaves are already showing on some of the seedlings.

I am not specifically recommending this germination method, but if you are as curious as I am, you might want to try it and then be able to monitor the germination progress.

Germination of Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) seeds

This is my own way of germinating Miracle Fruit seeds after many years of doing it. I accept that there might be other ways of going about it, but this method has turned out to be fairly successful for me.

Take it for what it is, my own experience on the subject, but I cannot garantee that your seeds will all or always germinate.

If you have any questions, comments, or experiences that will improve this method, please share them here with everybody.

1- Clean seeds - Soak them in water for 1/2 hour and gently clean the seeds with brush and using very mild soap solution. Rinse seeds with plenty of clean water.
Make this operation as aseptic as possible. No scarification or breaking of the outer shell is needed.

2- Hydrate seeds - Soak seeds for 24 hours more in clean water. Do not cover the seeds with water completely, leave 20% of seed out of water for oxygenation of seeds. Move the seed tray once in a while to circulate water. This will hydrate your seeds and get them ready for germination.

3- Prepare germination substrate - acquire a good germination substrate in your local gardening store. Check if substrate comes sterilized, if not, sterilize your substrate by soaking it with boiling water. Miracle Fruit prefers a slightly acidic soil. A PH of 6.2 to 6.5 will be best.

4- Plant seeds - Plant seeds under substrate about 1/4" deep. Keep substrate moist but never soaked. Use deep germination trays or individual tall germination pots. The Miracle Fruit plant first shoots a long radical root, you do not want to restrict radical root growth using shallow planting containers. This is why you do not see any progress on the surface at first but germination is actually hapening underneath. Do not compact substrate too much. Let the watering process do that. You want a loose and oxygenated substrate.

Germination should start after 3-16 weeks.
