Boating Joke

Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, a blonde, new to boating was having a problem. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't get her brand new 22-ft Bayliner to perform.

It wouldn't get on a plane at all, and it was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power she applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, she putted over to a nearby marina. Maybe they could tell her what was wrong.

A thorough topside check revealed everything was in perfect working order. The engine ran fine, the outdrive went up and down, the prop was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check underneath.

He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer.

Poison fumes aboard boat killed couple

Poison fumes killed couple

A couple found dead on their boat in a village near Gnosall died of carbon monoxide poisoning, it has been confrim

The deaths of Michael Tudor and his girlfriend Karen Lesley Van-Rooyen are believed to have been caused by a fault in the boat’s outboard engine.

A friend discovered the couple lying dead, along with one of their two dogs, at Norbury Junction. They were found last Wednesday on the cruiser, called The Drunken Duck, moored next to The Junction pub and opposite Norbury Wharf. Mr Tudor, aged 46, and Miss Van-Rooyen, 42, had lived on the boat, on the Shropshire Union Canal, for some time.

Staffordshire Police spokesman Peter Bate said toxicology tests confirmed they died from carbon monoxide poisoning. He said: "Although the deaths will still be subject to a full inquest, initial inquiries suggest that this was as a result of a fault in the boat’s outboard motor. Further tests on the boat are being carried out by British Waterways."

Mr Bate added: "Police officers are not treating the deaths as suspicious but are preparing a full report for the coroner."

British Waterways has now issued a warning to other boaters to take extra care with fuel-burning appliances.

Its Boat Safety Scheme manager Graham Watts said residential or intensive users of boats were most at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning.

"If fuel-burning appliances are on, or the petrol generator is running, anyone aboard showing the earliest symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, difficulty in thinking clearly and feeling sick, should get off the boat and seek medical help straight away," he said.

Go Boating - Stay Safe Carbon Monoxide

Today's tips to help you to enjoy your boating.

Carbon Monoxide

Top Tips    for your safety

Staying safe is simple…

• Never block cabin ventilators.

• Never use LPG cooking appliances for space heating.

• Never leave LPG appliances on overnight, unless they are

designed to be left on and are of the room sealed type.

• Never use mobile (cabinet) gas heaters - they are not suitable

for use in boats and introduce extra fire safety hazards.

• Never bring lit barbecues into the cabin - charcoal gives off

  CO gas.

• Never cover the air inlet or heat outlet of a cabin heater.

• Never use an appliance you think may be faulty or unsafe.

• Never operate petrol powered generators inside an enclosed

space, or close to any opening or ventilator which leads into

  the cabin space.

• Never run a boat's petrol engine with the craft moored

against another object such as a wharf, a lock wall or another

boat - the exhaust gases could easily deflect back into the

boat. Avoid running your engine when moored in a crowded

marina, particularly when the air is still.

Happy Boating to all
