How many People do we really know?

Some more of old William Shakespeare.Again just one more from Prince Hal before we move onto some new pastures:-

"I know you all and will awhile uphold the

unyoked humour of your idleness.

herein will I permit the base contagious clouds

to smother up its beauty from the earth

....I'll so offend to make offence a skill

Redeeming time when men think least I will.

Ever disliked anyone you worked with?I once had a linr manager who i did not get on with.he felt himself to be very superior and we got off on the wrong foot on the day he started. He swaggers into the office occupied by my colleague and I."Why was the door closed.I dont approve of my subordinates having the door to their office closed. From now on that door will remain open at all times."My colleague who was personnel manager at the time began to explain that it was a fire door and had to be kept closed."That's no excuse my ruling still stands."

And that was the way he introduced himself to us.As he walked away.Wayne - my office 5 minutes. His office 5 minutes.I knocked on his door."come".I entered and went to sit down."no need for you to sit down - this wont take long."I have been here less than a day and realise that things have been pretty free and easy. All that is about to change...he continued for at least 10 mins telling me all the things he was going to do.When he finished I said "Brian, I realise that..."he cut me short "Brian Brian "he fulminated "You will at all times address me as mr Maunder. You will respect me as your superior and you will never question my commands."

we got onterribly.I would deliberately mislead him and make sure when something went well I got the praise from the chap who was his line manager. And if things went wrong he got the blame.

3 months went by and the big boss went on holiday for 3 weeks leaving the likeable brian in charge.I'd been left with a massive folder of tasks and assignments and I knew that he similarly had.I also knew that 50% of that work which he should be doing would very soon be winging its way to me.It did and within a couple of days I'd done it all and within just over 2 weeks what had been left for me.At 4.45 the day before the big boss was due to return he caled me into his office and asked for all the work.I gave him some of his own and none of mine."I suppose thyat will have to do but Ill be making it clear in my report that you should have done more." Just before finishing I left 2 folders on the big boss' desk. All the work i had been given and the work I'd done for brian but had not passed over.At 9.15 next day the big boss asked me to go in to his room. Maunder was there."Hello wayne I've looked thru thework folders and am vey pleased with the work.I can see what you've been doing whilst i have been away. But brian what have you been doing?"he did not have an answer ,muttered something about having to sort out personal problems and that all the staff had been uncooperative.

Within 2 months he had gone.

If we only knew it almost every interaction we have withsomeone gives us an opportunity for finding a little more out about ourselves. But were all so busy - in being busy more often than not - that we don't take a little time to assess, evaluate and review. In later years I built this mechanism into my daily working life and it served me well. And each day always started (and still does)with 3 tasks under 3 headings. The M.I.L. way of working

What I MUST do

What I INTEND to do

What I would LIKE to do

I swear by it.

Banish Falstaff and banish the world -- Falstaff's response to Prince Hal in Henry iv Part 1 when the latter said he wanted nothing more to do with his former friend, guide and mentor

What can someone do that has not been done before? And does anyone really care? Is a blog nothing more than an acceptable way  of showing off? I suspect that 90% of blogs are only ever read by the authors. That's ok - as long as it is giving you a bit of pleasure, making you smile at your ability that is above the head of most.No you keep on writing - it is a very cathartic process.

Going back to trying to think of a new approach to writing a blog I reached the conclusion that it would be helpful to use as a basis something that you enjoyed and that you knew at least something about. As I put a cd on to play I thought that music was something I know quite a lot about and also all that equipment you use to play it.And then there are the words, lyrics, poetry - let's call it literature.Like a revelation it came to me.Music and literature are my passions.Listening, reading and writing.

So,what I intend to do is to use every blog entry as a reference to a piece of music.Either the title of a track or an album or some lyrics.Or it will have as a reference something with a literary connection.

There you have it! You will never have to put up with insomnia again be cause a couple of paragraphs of my blog will put you to sleep.I wonder if I can patent that and market it as a medicinal product.
