OUR DAILY BREAD - WHERE IT COMES FROM PROJECT

Following up from the launch of the Year of Food & Farming at Highgrove last year. I have been involved in a 'Field to Plate' project with a local school. This project recently won an award for being one of the most innovative projects of it's kind.

The project came about because it was increasingly clear that most children do not know where their food comes from or what it is made from. When questioned, it became apparent that their knowledge on these matters ended with 'from the supermarket!'

A small field of organic wheat (donated by HRH The Prince of Wales) was planted, by primary school children, from nearby Crawley, on our school's farm. The primary school's pupils returned at regular intervals to check the wheats progress.

The wheat was recently harvested and roughly milled in the classroom by the primary school pupils and under the guidance of my wife and I, they turned the resultant flour into bread rolls.  Each pupil made 4 rolls and took them home at the end of the session.

This is one group of students who definitely know where their 'DAILY BREAD COMES FROM!'

BAKING FOR ROYALTY

Last year my son and I were fortunate enough to be invited to the launch of The Year of Food and Farming initiative. Not only were we invited, we also baked for HRH Prince Charles. This year long  initiative is to teach children where their food comes from. This is why we were invited to bake. My son ran a portable milling machine, milling organic wheat grown on the Princes' Home Farm, whilst I baked bread and rolls from his own flour. Local primary school children, mentored by students from the school where I am a Governor, participated in both operations.  The Prince actually milled some wheat and helped to make some rolls.
The bread and rolls were then taken to Highgrove House and presented to the guests at the official launch later that day. The students, my son and I actually joined the guests for lunch.
Several notable people were there, Jimmy from Jimmy's Farm, TV presenter Ben Fogle and Raymond LeBlanc the chef. The students collected autographs and chatted to these people.
Prince Charles went out of his way to speak to everyone present, including myself , who had a lengthy chat with him about the benefits of children having contacts with animals.

CHARITY BAKING

SOUTH of ENGLAND SHOW
Each year my wife and I spend three days of baking for charity at the South of England Show. Working in the 'Meet The Farmers' barn and using a 'bake off' oven which bakes just 18 loaves at a time, we manage to raise around  £600 for local good causes every year. This is achieved by asking for donations for either taking a loaf away, or asking a question. The money raised is shared between a local primary school and towards the animal showing expenses of another school's farm.

Whilst at the shows we re-introduced an old Sussex loaf - the Sussex Batch - which was is received. To help us produce consistent bread, we used the self same improver that we sell on ebay, in fact we have many enquiries about it and regularily pick up some new customers in the process.
