A man with an outstanding creative vision. He recognised the importance of the orientalism movement at that time and decided to create a particular style of orientalist terracotta sculptures. The models were designed by renowned artists including Arthur Strasser and portrayed the physical characters and the emotions of North African and African American subjects. The Company also produced a series of historical classical and theatrical subjects including Othello and Henry VIII. In 1897 Friedrich died in Nice. His wife Regina became the owner of the firm and continued to produce romantic models of women reflecting the Art Noveau style by renowned artists like Bouval, who designed in 1897 the plaque which then became the trademark of the Company in 1900. During this period the firm participated in the most important exhibition of the period the 1900 International Exhibition in Paris. With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 the Firm gradually diverted their production of Art Nouveau terracottas to more economical earthenware models in the Viennese style. In 1918 Regina died and the sons, Walter and Marcel became the joint owners of the firm officially in 1920. They employed the best artists such as Lorenzl, Dakon etc. who reflected the advent of the Art Deco style and created a magnificent selection of colourful models capturing the flamboyance, glamour and flair of post war Europe. The Company flourished and in 1925 participated in the International Exhibition in Paris. In 1926 Marcel left the Firm and established his own ceramic company. Walter as the sole owner continued to manufacture numerous models but with the outbreak of the Second World War in 1938 he had to hand over the firm to the Germans and leave Vienna for the U.S.A. In 1939 Marcel came to England. The Firm remained under German occupation until the end of the War and in 1950 Walter returned to Vienna. Despite endless efforts to revive the Firm it went into liquidation in 1954. A sad end to a great enterprise. Ends 20th July Ora Pinhas |
